Director Statement

20 years ago, when my wife and I were not married yet, we had to make our appointments secretly. By that time, we were not allowed to speak normally to know each other well. We were only allowed to meet in the presence of a third person.
We needed to know more about each other, but our cultural restrictions and social laws did not allow us to do it freely. We were not allowed to walk in the streets, go to coffee shops or do usual things like that. We were always afraid that an acquaintance may see us and this would cause a serious problem for us. So, sometimes we made our appointments out of the village, in the mountains. It may look so poetic, but we just wanted to be alone for a while.
After we got married, I made a short film about it that was very successful, but it was not allowed to be shown in Iran. It was censored.
It is a systematic problem in my country. After the Islamic Revolution, the relation between girls and boys become forbidden. They always try to separate men and women. The rulers do their best to prevent any relation between them. It causes them to increase their secret relations.
Now, I have a son who is a teenager. He always asks me how he can find a girlfriend. They go to separate schools, sit in different places in busses and Metro and so on. There is no relation between boys and girls in their generation. They become farther and farther from each other, so they will face problems in future…
20 years ago, before we got married, my wife and I feared meeting each other in public places, and it is still as same as it was. Logically, the situation should gradually become better, but it has not happened yet. Girls and boys are not allowed to talk to each other freely and are not allowed to be friends in society. They have to do it secretly, even if they can find the way. Most of the time, it causes some serious problems for both of them, like being arrested by police.
The situation is somewhat better in large cities because there are different places in which they can secretly meet each other. But there are different problems in villages which are small and most people know each other. There are few places for them to meet secretly because most people know them everywhere they go, so it is almost impossible.
When I was a child, I saw deadly fights between families because of the secret relationships between boys and girls in the village. It is very horrible. It sometimes causes death or forces some people to leave the villages.

Fear from secret relationships does not let healthy relationships be formed. So, boys and girls know each other less and less, and the most important problem of the youth becomes the relation crisis. When this healthy relationship does not form, imagination becomes active, then fancies and uncontrolled loves are made. There are yet some boys and girls who marry only after one meeting. It is even common in some cities, while the situation in villages is worse and more regrettable.

Lovemaking was rubbed from our generation in our young timَe. So, I do not want my son to have such a problem anymore. Maybe this film can make the situation better for boys and girls. Now, I have decided to make another film with the same theme. I hope our voice will be better heard.
